Title and abstract
Metaphor and religion in the ESOL classroom
Metaphor is a fundamental feature of human thought and language, and plays an important role in artistic expression and everyday life. However, because understanding and using metaphorical language often requires implicit cultural knowledge, it can cause difficulties for learners of English both in comprehension and expression. This presentation will discuss how metaphor is understood through different theoretical lenses and how these theories might be applied in the classroom setting, with practical examples and exercises. The potential of using metaphor to expand topics for discussion within English teaching classrooms will also be discussed, with reference to research about the role of metaphor in helping and hindering understanding among people of different religious and cultural perspectives.
