Strategies and Activities for Success in the New Teaching Year

Language instructors often teach at a variety of institutions over their careers and must face being “the new teacher” at each one. Each school presents unique challenges in terms of the courses, students, and administrative work, and they offer varying degrees of support to both full-time and part-time instructors. In this workshop, Melody will share tips drawn from her own experiences teaching at various universities and serving as an administrator for six years in her university's English language division, a position in which she was responsible for new teacher orientation. Discussion will include useful questions new teachers should ask, as well as effective ways the school can help them succeed, including a system in which veteran teachers support them. This workshop can also benefit veteran teachers in approaching a new teaching year.

Following her talk, teachers will be asked to share activities you will do in the first week.

Here are the details:


Groups of 4 to 5. Each group will choose a moderator and also a secretary to take notes on the activities.


Explain an activity you are thinking to do in the first classes of the year.

What to bring:

Anything to show what you will do.

How long:

There is no set time limit, but to fit all in and to allow for questions, 5 minutes maximum would be a good ideal.

Then what:

Jason (West Tokyo JALT’s Program Chair) will collect the notes from the secretaries and create a downloadable PDF for everyone.

Presenter: Melody Elliott, Tokai University

Melody Elliott is an associate professor at Tokai University's International Education Center (IEC) and has over 20 years of EFL teaching experience in Japan in diverse settings. She has taught a wide range of university courses that include content-based courses, as well as listening, speaking, reading, writing, TOEFL, academic writing, and discussion and presentation. In addition, she served as vice-chair of the center’s English language division for six years. Her research interests include the connections between extensive reading and reading fluency and ESP/EAP/content-based instruction.
